Spring Trends: Slept-In Smokey Eye

My quest for the perfect smokey eye has led me far and wide, although it's safe to say I won't go as far as Kristen Stewart who recently admitted she actually does sleep in her eye makeup to create the perfect look! From my first foray into makeup at 13, sporting some rather unflattering panda eyes (didn't we all have a goth phase?), smokey shadow has always been a firm favourite in my makeup repertoire. Nowadays I like to keep things slightly more understated, which is why I'm such a big fan of the new slept-in trend for Spring. Try updating the classic smokey look by adding a sheer wash of metallic sheen on top of your favourite black eyeshadow, this little addition of a lustrous shimmer on the eye makes a darker shadow totally wearable in the day time - now the morning after can look as good as the night before!

To create the eye makeup above I applied Carbon by Mac all over the lid, blending at the crease and sweeping underneath the eye. I've never found such a highly pigmented black eyeshadow as Carbon, it really is the blackest of blacks! I then used my finger to press Topshop Glow Highlighter in Polish all over the lid. This creamy iridescent highlighter keeps things fresh and modern while slightly creasing the shadow for that lived-in look. Finally, I pencilled in my waterline with Mac Pro Longwear Eye Liner in Black Ice and added a couple of coats of mascara. Mac Pro Longwear is worth investing in - its soft, creamy texture means it glides on so smoothly, while the formula stays put for 12 hours without smudging! Finish the look by pairing with structured brows and a nude lip to keep eyes in the spotlight.
