How To: Keep Your Makeup On All Night

With New Year's Eve only a day away, it seemed like the perfect time to post this guide to making your makeup stay put all evening. The key to still having a flawless face come 5am is all in the pre-makeup prep. Oh, and a heavy-duty setting spray but we'll get to that later...

If I have time to spare before a big night out, I'll apply a radiance-boosting face mask like Glamglow Youthmud. This stuff originated in Hollywood studios and was used on film stars before they went on camera. It also has the title of the 'best face mask in the world', so you know it's a pretty big deal. First, the French sea clay gets everything glowing and tightened - then, when you rinse off the mask, the volcanic rock doubles up as a scrub for soft, smooth skin.

Exfoliating lips is a must too! Especially if you're wearing a bold lip or a matte colour, as they can instantly highlight any flakey skin. A soft toothbrush will usually do the job, but I also love The Lip Scrub by Sara Happ. It comes in a delicious variety of flavours, from peach to crème brulee, and the sugar crystals leave lips tasting just as delicious as they smell.

After following my normal skincare routine, I'll then apply a primer. The award-winning Photo Finish Primer from Smashbox is a failsafe option, and perfect for spot-prone skin as it's completely oil-free. Your foundation just glides on after using this stuff! It's super lightweight, but leaves skin so silky - it feels like velvet to the touch.

When I want to give my makeup some serious staying powder, I'll also use a primer on my eyelids before applying eyeshadow. This stops any creasing and also boosts the pigment of the shadows. Urban Decay have now revamped the Eyeshadow Primer Potion (and the All Nighter Spray too, for that matter) and it now comes with a handy applicator so you can just swipe it onto your lids.

Finally, after I've finished with my makeup, I'll spritz on a setting spray. Remember when people on the TV show 'Snog Marry Avoid?' would spray their face with hairspray before leaving the house? This is kind of like that, except it won't kill your skin. Those girls wore so many layers of makeup, of course they knew what's up.
